The Porsche 904 Carrera GTS: A Street-Legal Race Car and 1960s Mid-Engine Masterpiece

Porsche produced the iconic sports car known as the 904 Carrera GTS in 1964. It has a mid-engine configuration, a lightweight fiberglass body, and was created as a street-legal race car. It had a four-cylinder engine with a top speed of more than 160 mph and 180 horsepower.

The Porsche 904 Carrera GTS has a very interesting history. It debuted in 1963 as the 718 model’s replacement. It was created to take part in a variety of international racing competitions in the FIA-GT class. The Porsche 904 Carrera GTS was one of the first Porsches to use a fiberglass body for weight reduction, and it won several races, including the Targa Florio in 1964.

Between 1964 and 1965, Porsche built 106 904 Carrera GTS cars. Yet, some sources claim that just 59 cars were made. Depending on how prototypes, racing versions, and road-legal versions are counted, the precise number may change.
